And yet, I have started to notice that this kind of listing is becoming increasingly ordinary on platforms such as eBay, to the point where it is beginning to change the way certain manga are perceived. Behind BGS grades, auction listings and slabbed volumes, it is not only a new market taking shape: it is also a different relationship with cultural objects that is slowly beginning to settle in.

The strangest part of this shift is that it goes far beyond price. The volume I recently saw was not a major historical piece: no signature, no extremely limited print run, no direct connection to the production of the work itself. And yet, once certified and sealed inside its plastic case, it seemed to change status immediately. The manga became less a reading medium than an evaluated, standardized and potentially speculative object, presented through its grade before its content.

And this sense of unease I feel when looking at it is not new.

I discovered slabbed video games several years ago, and I never fully managed to understand the point of permanently sealing an already opened game inside plastic. Part of me even found the idea contradictory to the nature of the medium itself: a video game is made to be played, just as a manga is made to be read.

At the time, I imagined a system where an NFC chip would allow the object to be reopened and played, while automatically canceling its grade. As if the simple act of using the work were suddenly enough to make it lose part of its value. I was trying to find a way to make a sealed object usable again.

But the more I look at certain slabbed manga today, the more this contradiction shocks and unsettles me.

This visual shows several CGC-graded video games from different consoles, all sealed inside plastic cases.

When manga gradually stops being seen as a simple reading medium

The issue goes far beyond preservation. I am extremely sensitive to condition and flaws myself (a discoloration or even a slightly bent corner can make me buy another copy of a book) so I fully understand why some collectors want to keep their volumes in the best possible condition. Some editions become harder to find over time, some first prints take on a particular importance within a collecting journey, and certain objects naturally end up acquiring a memorial or documentary dimension.

But grading changes something beyond condition: it also transforms the way the manga is perceived.

For a long time, manga remained a deeply popular object. A medium made to be handled, carried around, read and reread. Even in the largest collections — I own more than 1,500 volumes — it still keeps something alive. A bit of wear, a small crease or the marks of time almost became part of its story. Our own copy remains tied to the experience it contains, and to the experience it gave us.

Some of the most important manga in a collection are not even in perfect condition. They sometimes carry the traces of obsessive reading, a move, or simply a specific period in our lives. Mine have all been opened, read, reread and sometimes even lent out. I replace them when they become too damaged or get lost, but never to the point of forgetting that a manga also exists to be lived with.

The slab introduces a different logic. Once sealed inside its plastic case, the manga gradually becomes an object viewed more for its condition than for the work itself.

Everything then shifts toward elements that are secondary to the work itself:

the grade,

certification,

the resale potential,

the rarity, often assumed.

All of this comes before the story, the art, or the cultural impact of the series.

And the more this phenomenon develops, the more one question becomes impossible to avoid: at what point does the plastic begin to matter more than the manga it is supposed to protect?

Logan Paul appears with two graded copies of Weekly Shōnen Jump: issue 51 from 1984, tied to the first chapter of Dragon Ball, and issue 34 from 1997, tied to the first chapter of One Piece.

Manga, in turn, enters the mechanics of grading

This shift obviously did not come out of nowhere. For several years, the collectibles market has increasingly revolved around the certification and standardization of cultural objects. Between 2020 and 2023, this was one of my own major concerns when I was trying to launch a project connected to certification and NFTs.

American comics have lived with this logic for a long time, as have Pokémon cards. Some retro video games have also been sealed inside airtight cases for years, sometimes without ever having been played.

Until quite recently, manga still seemed relatively protected from this approach. Collectors were mostly looking for specific editions, particular memories or personal ties to a work. The value came mainly from the object itself. From what it represented, whether through a memory, a reader’s journey, or an artist one admired.

Today, the market is gradually adopting a different logic. A slab immediately creates an impression of prestige, rarity and seriousness. The volume is no longer presented only as a manga: it becomes a graded piece, assessed according to criteria close to those used in other speculative markets.

The slab is also reassuring because it gives an objective form to a passion that is, at its core, deeply subjective: loving a work, wanting to preserve it, believing it will still matter tomorrow.

This shift does not come only from grading companies or auction houses. Some of the content produced around collecting is also helping to transform the way certain objects are perceived. On YouTube, TikTok or Whatnot, cards, manga and video games are often shown through their price, their assumed rarity or their “investment” potential.

The object then becomes less a work to be discovered than an asset to be shown, discussed or publicly monetized.

The problem is not that this visibility is exploding. The problem is that it gradually begins to replace the collector’s personal gaze, until the displayed value comes before the object’s actual memory. And that is probably where everything starts to become slightly blurred and distorted.

Because by trying to turn every object into a potential premium piece with future value, the market also risks artificially creating a sense of rarity around volumes that are often relatively common. An accessible Japanese first print can suddenly be presented as an investment piece simply because it has a high grade and a transparent plastic case.

Manga then begins to look less like a cultural work than an asset whose desirability is amplified by the market itself.

eBay listing showing a Japanese copy of Fate/Zero Vol. 1 graded BGS 9.4, listed at the staggering price of $5,100.

Preserving a work, or profoundly changing the relationship we have with it?

This is probably the paradox that fascinates me most in this shift.

The more perfectly a manga is preserved, the less it can truly be considered the medium it was originally meant to be. In some cases, it even becomes impossible to leaf through it without immediately losing part of its potential value. Reading itself almost becomes secondary to the importance placed on condition.

I think this is exactly what bothers me today in some sales involving slabbed manga. The problem does not come from grading itself. Some collectors find in it a form of security, clarity or recognition, and that is their way of collecting. The unease appears when this logic begins to shift the value of the manga toward its ability to become a credible speculative object.

Some pieces obviously deserve to be archived and protected under specific conditions. The unease begins when part of the market starts to move the value of manga almost entirely toward its ability to become a credible speculative object.

As if the work itself sometimes mattered less than its future potential on an auction platform.

eBay results in 2026 showing several BGS-graded Japanese manga, including Naruto, Bleach and One Piece.

What slabbed manga say about our time

The most interesting part of all this may not even be the slab itself. These objects mainly say something much broader about our time and about the evolution of contemporary collecting.

An era obsessed with:

certification,

perfect preservation,

grading,

the fear of missing a future value,

and the gradual transformation of almost any cultural object into a potential asset.

And this is probably where manga becomes a particularly fascinating case.

Seeing certain manga permanently sealed in plastic today may say less about the evolution of the works themselves than about the evolution of the way we look at them.

Because, deep down, manga has never been only an object meant to remain in perfect condition. It carries memories of reading, periods of life, sometimes absurd obsessions, and that strange ability some works have to stay with us long after we have closed the paper volume.

The real problem may begin when we no longer try to protect that memory, but only the idea that it might increase in value.

And at that point, what we are collecting is no longer really the manga, the card or the video game. It is its suffocation under plastic.

Article produced by imacollector® — an editorial archive dedicated to the memory and heritage of Japanese pop culture.

Content published for informational and documentary purposes.
