Fate\/stay night and its prequel Fate\/Zero are far more than cult anime from Ufotable and Type-Moon. Their narrative depth, their tortured characters, and the darkness of the Nasuverse make them a unique work\u2014one where chivalry, tragedy, and melancholy intertwine.In this article, I share why this universe became mine, through Rider, Shirou, Archer and Sakura\u2014and how it quietly changed my life. <\/p>\n\n

Chains rather than swords<\/h2>\n\n

I have always preferred chains to swords, because they tell a story that is more painful and far more real. Looking back on it, it is no coincidence that my favorite characters always fight with chains. Their chains are not necessarily a prison\u2026 but more often an omen, like a promise of melancholy and strength. <\/p>\n\n

Shun from Saint Seiya refused to fight. Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter lived only for revenge. And as a child, I saw myself in that melancholy. <\/p>\n\n

So when I discovered Rider in Fate\/stay night, I immediately knew I had found my character\u2014one who would stay with me for years.<\/p>\n\n

Shun of Andromeda marked me with his gentleness in a violent world. Later, Kurapika reinforced this fascination: his chains are weapons forged from grief and vengeance. <\/p>\n\n

That invisible thread naturally led me to Rider.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

2. My first encounter with Fate\/stay night (Studio Deen)<\/h2>\n\n

I entered the Type-Moon universe through the 2006 Studio Deen adaptation. Often criticized for its animation, it was still an essential gateway for me. <\/p>\n\n

    4. Characters as mirrors of myself<\/h2>\n\n

    Shirou is the eternal idealist. Always ready to sacrifice himself. <\/p>\n\n

    Admirable? Yes. Dangerous? Absolutely. <\/p>\n\n

    His question goes beyond fiction: can you exist only through others? Heaven\u2019s Feel pushes this dilemma to its limit. <\/p>\n\n

    To me, Archer is the most disturbing mirror. He is Shirou but after disillusionment. <\/p>\n\n

    He followed his ideal to the very end, only to realize that he had saved nothing. Shirou no longer believes in the purity of ideals. He has detached himself, becoming almost cynical. <\/p>\n\n

    He pursued his ideal until he understood its futility. <\/p>\n\n

    Cynical, detached, yet still acting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    Sakura Matou: silent suffering<\/h3>\n\n

    Sakura embodies a raw, fragile humanity. <\/p>\n\n

    Her relationship with Rin, between resentment and love, is one of the most moving parts of the Fate universe. <\/p>\n\n

    Between resentment and love lies the impossibility of fully mending what has been broken. Yet it is precisely within that imperfection that its truth resides. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    The Grail War is more than a narrative device: it is a metaphor. <\/p>\n\n

    Gilgamesh: the arrogance of the elite<\/h3>\n\n

    This unpleasant character embodies absolute elitism: the belief that everything is owed to him simply because he sees himself as above everyone else. <\/p>\n\n

    In a society obsessed with power and achievement, Gilgamesh is a chilling reflection of this arrogance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    Kirei Kotomine: the moral void of our time<\/h3>\n\n

    Kirei may be the most frightening character. Not because he is cruel, but because he is empty, truly empty. In doing so, he searches for meaning in his life, yet finds it only through destruction. <\/p>\n\n

    For me, he represents the essence of modern nihilism, where the absence of values becomes a value in itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    Shirou Emiya: a forgotten chivalric ideal<\/h3>\n\n

    Sacrificing oneself for others, serving a purpose greater than one\u2019s own\u2026<\/p>\n\n

    Yet this is no longer self-evident today, and that is precisely what makes his character so disturbing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    6. Ufotable and the visual sublimation of Fate<\/h2>\n\n

    If Studio Deen opened the door, Ufotable made me stay. <\/p>\n\n

    Their animation, colors, and direction gave Fate the majesty it deserved. <\/p>\n\n

    What impresses me is the coherence that comes from it. Fate does not simply string together Greek, Persian, or Arthurian myths. It goes much further: it twists them, reinvents them, and above all confronts them with deeply human dilemmas. <\/p>\n\n

    Thus, it is this blend of mythological grandeur and intimate fragility that makes Fate\/stay night a truly unique work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    From Shun to Kurapika, then to Rider, I\u2019ve always followed the same invisible thread: a fascination for characters who are chained, broken, yet filled with melancholic strength. <\/p>\n\n

    Fate\/stay night and Fate\/Zero aren\u2019t just stories of magic and holy wars. They are mirrors of our ideals and our wounds. <\/p>\n\n
