Many see that as a form of recognition. I also see something else: a tipping point, where works long regarded as traces, memories or fragments of creation are increasingly treated first and foremost as assets. The problem is not that a piece can be expensive. The problem begins when the market no longer just sets a price, but starts dictating how these works are meant to be seen. From that point on, the collector is no longer simply buying, selling or holding on to something. They have to decide what they stand for.

Because yes, a collector has every right to align with the market. Sometimes, they even have to. Once you have already been burned, once you have sold fairly to people who turned around a few weeks later and resold at absurd prices, naïveté stops being a virtue. Protecting yourself is not immoral. Refusing to be underpaid is nothing to be ashamed of.

The problem begins when the market is no longer defined by its framework, but by a mindset that no longer sits right with us.

More visibility, but not necessarily more respect

For a long time, animation art remained a fairly discreet world, almost invisible. Price gaps already existed. Opportunism was already there. But people could still enter it out of fascination for a work, obsession with a series, or love for a single line on paper (see my article: Original anime drawings: how a simple pencil line changed the way I collect).

Many collectors built their relationship with these pieces in a less aggressive environment, one that had not yet been shaped by the reflexes of today’s consumer market.

Unfortunately, that world has changed.

When collectors talk about it, the same themes come up again and again: more exposure, more competition, more business, more TCG-style logic, more flipping, more openly displayed speculation. Others offer a more nuanced view, and they are right to do so: passion has not disappeared. But it has become harder to see, because it is now submerged in a space where rarity is increasingly read through price.

That is the real shift. What we are facing is not the simple disappearance of passion, but its confrontation with another way of reading these objects, one many people did not expect to become so dominant.

The market is tightening for another reason too: the best pieces move around less

Another point comes up repeatedly in conversations with long-time collectors: the issue is not just that prices are rising. It is also that the best pieces circulate less.

The best pieces are becoming harder and harder to find. They are being held back, which is understandable. Or they reappear at prices so detached from reality that a large share of collectors instantly realizes they can no longer keep up. At that point, the market does not just become more expensive. It becomes more closed off, and more frustrating as a result.

That matters, because a market can stay alive even at high price levels as long as objects still circulate regularly. But once a certain combination takes hold — rising prices, shrinking supply, strong pieces being withheld, wildly inflated asking prices — we are no longer just talking about increasing value. We are talking about a space that quietly starts sorting out who will still be able to take part and who will gradually be pushed aside.

Because behind that palpable irritation, there is often a deeper fear: the fear of being slowly pushed out of a world one loves and cares about.

Selling at market price is not the problem

I need to be honest about this. Otherwise, this article would amount to little more than fine words.

Selling a piece at market price is not, in itself, something to condemn. It is not a betrayal of passion. A collector who knows what they own is worth and refuses to let it go for a ridiculous price is not necessarily engaging in business in the toxic sense of the term. They may simply be refusing to become the next victim of a middleman or an opportunist.

That distinction matters, and I want to stress it.

The problem is not collectors protecting themselves. The problem is the people who care only about profit, who undervalue when they buy, overplay rarity when they sell, import investment logic into a cultural space, and eventually push the idea that every piece should first be judged by its return potential.

Put differently: protecting yourself from the market is not the same thing as thinking like the market.

When the object stops being seen for what it is

So the real danger is not only economic. It is cultural.

Taken as a whole, animation art consists of production fragments, material traces, pieces of visual history. A layout, a genga, a cel, a background, an official reproduction: each of these points to a specific relationship with the work itself, its making, its era and its material reality.

When these objects are reduced to nothing but their ability to gain value, what they truly are gets distorted and damaged.

Of course, we can talk about market value, supply, demand and rarity. Pretending those things do not exist would be absurd. But the moment that lens becomes dominant, the object itself starts to lose ground. It is no longer seen as a witness to creation. It becomes a surface for financial projection.

That is when a market can see prices soar while hollowing out the very meaning of collecting.

The real problem is not being new, but arriving with the wrong reflexes

There is another trap to avoid as well: turning every newcomer into a culprit for rising prices.

The problem is not entering animation art today. A living space needs new eyes, new collectors and new sensitivities. Someone can discover this world recently and enter it with seriousness, curiosity, patience and respect.

The problem begins when people enter with habits already shaped elsewhere: thinking only in terms of price, speaking like investors, measuring quality by perceived rarity alone, confusing intrinsic value with the listed price, or treating it as normal that every cultural object should eventually be absorbed into a logic of return.

At that point, it is no longer a question of generation or seniority. It is a question of ethics.

That is also why this contemptuous “boomer” rhetoric irritates me so much. It turns lived market experience into a lazy generational cliché, when what is really at stake is market experience, memory of past abuses, and a sharper understanding of what happens when a world starts to shift.

Even those who criticize the market do not always escape it

Still, we need to keep a measure of lucidity. In this shift, no one is entirely innocent or entirely guilty.

Some denounce soaring prices as long as those prices exclude them, yet would probably have no issue buying at market level if they could afford it. Others criticize speculation while dreaming of landing their grail at the right moment, whatever the price may be.

The contamination runs far wider than that. Reducing it to a few rotten resellers would be too easy.

That is exactly what makes the subject interesting. The issue is not a simple clash between innocent enthusiasts and shady speculators. It shows how market logic eventually contaminates almost everyone’s way of seeing.

Little by little, everyone starts thinking more in terms of price and less in terms of the work itself. More in terms of opportunity, less in terms of memory.

And that is precisely why an ethics of collecting becomes necessary. Not because some people are morally superior, but because a framework has to be restated when everything pushes us to forget it.

For reference, here is a link to my ethical charter

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="597" src="https://im-a-collector.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/collection-imacollector-anime-art-respect-visibilite-enchere-evangelion-OK-1024x597.jpg" alt="Screenshot of a Yahoo! It becomes a question of what you place above what.

Either we accept that market value will eventually crush every other form of value, or we hold a firmer, more demanding line: a piece can be expensive without being admirable, a piece can be admirable without carrying an excessive price, and a collector can want to protect the value of what they own without turning their practice into a business model.

That nuance is what changes everything. Because this is not about denying the market. It is simply about preventing it from becoming the only language left.

As long as we can still speak about the work, about memory, transmission, an intimate bond with a series, a way of seeing, then all is not lost. But if collecting ends up meaning nothing more than positioning yourself well for profit, then it is not only the market that changes. It is the very meaning of collecting that starts to drain away.

What imacollector wants to defend above all else

That is exactly where a project like mine finds its reason to exist. I am not trying to play the nostalgic card, and even less to deny the reality of the market.

I created this project to remind people of one simple thing:

a price is not a way of thinking

a market rating is not a culture

a successful resale is not proof of love for a work

Documenting objects, putting them back into context, distinguishing between practices, naming the distortions, and above all defending intrinsic value without falling into naïveté — that is what I am trying to do.

To refuse the trap of confusing economic vigilance with profit logic.

Animation art is becoming more visible. That is not a bad thing in itself. But to me, the real question is this: what remains of our way of seeing, and of the object itself, when money starts to outweigh everything else?

From there, each person has to choose where they stand.

Article produced by imacollector® — an editorial archive dedicated to the memory and heritage of Japanese pop culture.

Content published for informational and documentary purposes.
